It's always nice to hear about people winning big money in poker tournaments, but it's even nicer to remember, on occasion, the more generous side of human nature, and see people playing for motivations other than the big win.
Last Sunday saw one such occasion – Jimmy's restaurant in Aspen was the site of the first in a series of Poker events aiming to raise money for three women with spinal injuries who need expensive stem cell treatment.
The event did not require a buy in, but donations averaged $200 per person. The winner of the event will receive a seat at the World Series of Poker tournament, and the members of the winning table will get a share of the top players' winnings.
Another poker event is planned soon, and the proceeds of the events will be combined with the Aspen Club's 30th Anniversary celebration and fund-raiser. It is hoped that the funds will be enough to send the three women to India for a course of stem cell treatment.
A two month course of treatment costs $40,000 – one of the women, Amanda Boxtel, had a short course earlier in the year, involving injections twice a day and intense physical therapy. The treatment has been successful and she has regained some feeling and moderate movement in her legs. She hopes that a second course will allow her to walk again.
