Marty Smyth, a man from co. Antrim, Ireland, is looking forward to an early Christmas as he gears up for a poker tournament which could net him a $1,000,000 prize.
Smyth, aged 31, will be competing in the tournaments penultimate table today. The semi finals of the Ladbrokes Poker Million VI, Europes longest running poker tournament, is being hosted at the Marriott Hotel in London.
Smyth will face off against six other players, including some of the biggest names in poker, including Kildare man Liam Flood. He has already defeated names such as Matt Dawson and Brian McFadden to get a place at the semi-final table.
The minimum prize for this table is $25,000, but Marty naturally hopes to make it to the finals and get the big million dollar prize.
Smyth has been a professional poker player for six years, but still admits to feeling some nerves. “I'm looking forward to it, but also a bit nervous too [...] There's not much preparation I can do other than get a good nights sleep.” he said, “I've been watching footage of the other five guys playing in earlier stages, as I'm sure they're doing too, apart from that there's not much I can do to prepare.”
Smyth has already won one tournament, the Irish Open, earlier this year. Between tournaments he regularly plays poker online.
