Tim Henman has expressed concern over the allegations that there is a gambling ‘epidemic’ surrounding the sport. The tennis player sees the match fixing allegations as a very serious issue, and feels that it has cast a shadow over the sport.
Henman, who retired around two months ago, also ruled out any possibility of him joining Andy Murray’s support team, following Murray’s split with his American coach, Brad Gilbert. Murray and Gilbert have had a successful career together, but their relationship had been rather fiery, as their personalities and styles did not appear to match.
Henman believes that the problem is still only on a small scale, but commented, on BBC Five Live’s Sportsweek "It’s very serious allegations and players have obviously been approached because they’ve said as much, [....] We don’t want that anywhere near our sport. It’s never happened to me and I never saw it happen, and if it has happened I think it’s been on a small number of occasions."
He also went on to say "We have to make sure that we are aware of it taking place and stamp it out. But to say there is a gambling problem or an epidemic in the sport, in my opinion that couldn’t be further from the truth."
