The 2008 Canadian Open Poker Championship is scheduled to take place in Calgary this March.

The event will take place over five days, and will offer CDN $1.3 million in prize money.   The winner of the main event will walk away with more than CDN $200,000, while the runner up will take $100,000.

The event will see players from around the world vying for the prize, and the fame that winning the televised event will bring. "We’re going to be televising the event not only in Canada, but around the world in Australia, England, Italy and France", said Kelly Kellner – the CEO of headsUp Entertainment, who will be hosting the event.

The tournament is expected to attract a number of big name players, including past World Series of Poker Main Event winners such as Huck Seed, as well as local poker stars such as Greg Mueller and Brad Booth.

Many Canadian casinos are holding poker tournaments where hopefuls can earn a seat at the Canadian Open Poker Championship as a prize. Kellner pointed out that in poker, anything can happen – highlighting the success of Chris Moneymaker – a casual online poker player who won a seat at the World Series of Poker through an online satellite tournament, and went on to win almost $2 million.
