The gang of robbers responsible for the armed heist on the Boardwalk Casino in Port Elizabeth may be the same ones who have carried out several similar heists in the Gauteng area.
The recent Boardwalk Casino heist saw a team of armed robbers threaten security guards, and caused customers to run for cover as shots were fired in the casino. The robbers took an estimated R250,000 from cash desks in the casino.
Police have discovered that one of the getaway cars used in the Boardwalk Casino heist was reported hijacked in Gauteng a few days before. Also, the M.O for the Boardwalk Casino robbery matches the robberies carried out last year at Monte Casino and Carnival City in Johannesburg.
Ed Richardson, a spokesman for the casino, commented on the robbery, saying “A lot of questions are being asked about how 10 heavily armed men were able to get from the casino to the car park without alarms being raised [...] Our primary concern is for the patrons and staff. We do not have armed guards as we feel that should there be an armed robbery, the likelihood that robbers would start shooting would be higher if guards were armed.”
Nobody was hurt in the robbery, but several staff and customers were left shaken. The casino is providing counseling for those who witnessed the incident.
