The cause of the fire at the Monte Carlo casino-hotel has been determined. Fire officials discovered that the fire was caused by flying molten metal from a hand held cutting torch.
Work was being carried out on the casino by workers who did not have proper permits. They were cutting corrugated steel to set up some window washing equoipment, and did not use the correct mats to protect the roof material.
The contracting company, Union Erectors LLC, had not applied for a permit. Deputy Fire Chief Giarard Page commented that if they had applied, they would have been approved within weeks, and told how to safely carry out the work. “It does take time and effort,” he said, “but it's not that difficult”.
The contractor could face fines of $1,000 and up to six months in jail, if officials decide to cite them for misdemeanor.
The fire started on the southwest corner of the roof of the 32 story casino hotel, and quickly spread through the foam like material on the façade of the building. Gamblers and guests were forced to evacuate, and the casino had to close while repairs were completed. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, and the fire was eventually contained – around 120 fire personnel attended the scene.
