Two brothers, and professional poker players, are facing a jail sentence after a Glasgow court heard how they exploited a malfunction in some HBOS ATM machines, in order to withdraw more than £150,000.
The pair, Mohammed Imran, aged 33, and Mohammed Irfan, aged 36, were planning to use the money to pay for a trip to Las Vegas and enter some high stakes tournaments, including the World Series of Poker.
They made hundreds of withdrawals from various Glasgow cash machines, over a period between the 29th May and 1st June 2005, capitalising on a fault which allowed them to withdraw funds using an expired HBOS card. The fault occurred after the merger of the Halifax bank and the Bank of Scotland.
After the bank noticed the problem, they traced the card back to a sister in law of one of the brothers. HBOS have confirmed that none of their customers lost any money as a result of the exploit.
