Donald Trump has called on casinos in Atlantic City to sue over a new smoking ban approved by the Atlantic City Council, arguing that it placed casinos in the area at a competitive disadvantage.
Trump is the chairman of a company that owns three casinos in Atlantic City; the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort, Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, and Trump Marina Hotel Casino. He said that he would not file his own suit, but asked 11 casinos in the Casino Association of New Jersey to act to prevent the ban from taking effect in October.
Trump commented “I'm not a smoker, and I don't personally like what smoking does to people, but this puts us at a huge disadvantage.”
Last April a partial smoking ban was imposed that restricted smoking to 25% of the casino floor. Following the partial ban, slot parlors in the Philadelphia area drew away many of the Atlantic City casinos' customers, as the parlors allow customers to smoke while gambling.
Anti smoking campaigners believe that the partial restriction does not work, as the areas where smoking is permitted are not walled off, and smoke still spreads across the casino floor.
