A new casino is to be situated on the Danube

A new Las Vegas-style casino resort is to be built in the Hungarian capital Budapest.

Work on a luxury gaming resort in central Budapest is set to commence in the near future after a development consortium won a competitive tender for Hungary's first major casino licence.

The Dream Island consortium, which is made up of property developer Plaza Centers, hotel group Danubius, Hungarian bank MKB and a private investor, has ambitious plans for a site on Obuda Island, which is situated in the Danube in the capital.

Its €1.5 billion budget is designed to stretch to cover the construction of a luxury casino complete with 4,000 slots and 200 table games, as well as 3,000 hotel rooms, an opera house, theatre, shopping mall, museum, convention centre and marina.

Plaza's chief executive Ran Shtarkman claimed Dream Island would be the first development in the continent capable of competing with the casino resorts of Las Vegas and Macau and would allow local people "to enjoy, relax, gamble and entertain themselves in a mega-resort of the biggest magnitude in Europe".

One potential customer is Valdemar Kwaysser, the Hungarian who fended off competition from some leading professionals to win last weekend's Latin American Poker Tour event in Costa Rica.ADNFCR-1691-ID-18611832-ADNFCR
