Sir Charles Barkley, the former NBA star, has paid off his $400,000 gambling debt, which had been owed to the Wynn Las Vegas Casino.
The casino had sued him after he failed to pay back the $400,000 in gambling loans. The civil lawsuit is still open, and Barkley will have to pay a futher $40,000 to settle the case.
Barkley is now a basketball analyst for Turner Network Television.
Barkley said that he did not know that he owed the $40,000 processing fee, but will pay it. “True to my word” he said, “I sent a $400,000 cashier's check overnight to Wynn Las Vegas, which they confirmed they received. I was unaware of the additional 10 percent processing fee from the district attorney's office and will make restitution on that promptly.”
A spokeswoman for the Wynn Las Vegas Casino, Jennifer Dunne, said it received a check on Tuesday afternoon, which it passed on to the district attorney. Dunne confirmed that “We've been paid in full, the rest is the district attorney fee.”
Barkley could face criminal prosecution if he does not pay the fee. Clark County District Attorney David Roger said that "[...The district attorney's office...] have been in contact with his representative, [...and...] expect a check for $40,000 within the next few days."
