A Danish poker player took the top prize in Spain following a battle with a Scandinavian rival.
Denmark's Casper Hansen became the first winner on season seven of the World Poker Tour (WPT) when he clinched victory in the Spanish Championship on Tuesday.Hansen defeated Stefan Mattsson in a 45-hand heads-up to secure the first prize of 400,000 (£320,000) and a seat at the season-ending WPT World Championship.
Sweden's Mattsson, who began the final table as chip leader, had to settle for the 220,000 second prize, while Thiago Nishijima picked up 112,300 after being eliminated in third.
Andres Vidal, Guy Sitbon and Martin Lundenius completed the top six.
WPT events generally attract the strongest fields in professional poker, but the proximity of this tournament to the beginning of the World Series of Poker meant many of the leading US players opted not to travel to Barcelona.
Top European professionals including Patrik Antonius, Juha Helppi, Bertrand Grospellier, Erik Friberg and Annette Obrestad did compete but were unable to make an impact on the event.
