Gambling on mobile phones is predicted to be the next big growth area of the industry as products become more user-friendly.
Mobile gambling will be the next big area of remote gambling, according to the organisation that claims to be the voice of the industry. The Remote Gambling Association has suggested that a number of commentators believe this form of gambling has the potential to bring in billions of pounds in revenue.
"It's difficult to say how large it will grow but as telephone technology develops, products will increase and they will become far more user-friendly," said the group's business director Ben Wright.
However, it is unlikely that gambling on mobile handsets will overtake the internet in terms of popularity and usage, he added.
The Gambling Commission's British Gambling Prevalence Survey, published in 2007, found that 32 million people in the UK gambled in 2006. This compared with the 33 million people who gambled in 1999.
