The prizes on offer at poker websites compare favourably to those in casinos, it has been claimed.
Poker players hoping to make good money from their hobby can do so by entering online tournaments, according to an industry expert.Live action events often grab the headlines, particularly those where the prizes on offer are life changing - such as the $8.25 million won by Jerry Yang at last year's World Series of Poker.
However, Dave Woods, editor-in-chief of PokerPlayer magazine, explained that gamblers who are more likely to find themselves in a local casino than competing against the world's best players could find that online poker rooms are a profitable place to play.
"The prize money doesn't really differ, it's just the numbers of people that are playing and the times that you can find a game," he replied when asked about the difference between the two types of tournament.
Mr Woods added that as well as offering players the convenience of games taking place round the clock, poker websites are generally cheaper than casinos because there are no table charges.
