The unexpected success story at this year's US Open once appeared in the World Series of Poker (WSOP).
Rocco Mediate, the man who finished second in yesterday's gripping US Open championship playoff showdown with Tiger Woods, once took part in poker's biggest tournament. It has emerged that the 45-year-old was one of the players to contest the 2005 WSOP main event, finishing 600th out of more than 5,500 card enthusiasts.
The Pennsylvanian golfer could not quite bluff his way to victory in last night's golf, but perhaps he may turn his attention to the card tables of Las Vegas, with a number of events at this year's WSOP still scheduled to be played.
Any sports betting fans who put an each-way bet on Mediate to win the golf at Torrey Pines are likely to have won a considerable amount of money, as the man was ranked 158th in the world prior to the event and was judged to be a complete outsider.
However, his odds for future competitions are set to lower after the man entered golf's top 50 players following his superb display this weekend.
