A man from Hope Mills has been sentenced to five months in jail and a further five months of confinement to his home following an investigation into an illegal video poker scheme that he operated in the state of North Carolina.
Michael Waguespack was the owner of a Cumberland County business called 'Funtime Amusements' – the business sold and operated video poker machines that paid out more than the then state limit of $10 per hand. Video poker has since been banned in the state of North Carolina.
The business was raided by investigators, and Waguespack faces prison for his role in the business.
Waguespack has reached a civil settlement with Cumberland County for $230,000 and a federal government settlement for more than $1 million in connection with the gambling operation. He will also have to pay a fine of $4,000 in connection with the criminal case.
U.S. Attorney George Holding issued a statement saying "This sentence represents a clear statement that those who ignore the law in pursuit of profit will ultimately face serious consequences".
