Study Finds Air In Lexington Bingo Halls Unsafe

While bingo halls in the UK are struggling thanks to the recent ban on smoking in public places, bingo halls in the USA have the opposite problem.

A recent study by the University of Kentucky has found that bingo halls in Lexington are unsafe due to second hand smoke.

The study tested five different bingo halls in the Lexington area, and found that indoor pollution in the halls was 6.8 times higher than the national air quality standard for outdoor air, and 13 times higher than in most smoke free venues.

The author of the study said that this shows that those who attend the halls are exposing themselves to dangerous toxins.

Ellen Hahn, a professor at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing, said “What people don't realise is that when air pollution is at 35 micrograms per cubit meter, the EPA would come to Lexington to shut down our manufacturing facilities, and on a typical day we're about 16 or 17 outside, so in our bingo halls we're greatly higher than that, 7 times higher than that.”

It is expected that the results of the study will be used as part of the current debate as to whether bingo halls should be exempt from Lexington's non-smoking rules.

If those supporting a ban in Northern Kentucky counties needed ammunition for a ban, they've found some in this study. I've seen the same results in several other studies from several other states. Here's just one of many:

Anyway good luck to those working for the ban. And hopefully the state legislature will soon get to work on a statewide ban.
