Mecca Bingo - seeking licence

A Wednesbury bingo provider is one of the first to react to last month’s change to the Gambling Act.

A bingo hall in the midlands has become one of the first numbers game operators to apply for a new adult gaming licence, it has been reported.

Mecca Bingo Hall in Wednesbury has made the application in order to gain permission to place high-value slot machines on its premises, reports the Express and Star.

This comes after the government announced at the end of last month that bingo halls would be able to provide such facilities, having been banned from doing do under changes to the Gambling Act in 2007.

Other halls are expected to follow the Wednesbury property's lead.

Explaining why extra revenue is needed, Jez Marron, operations manager of Mecca Bingo in neighbouring Brierley Hill, told the local newspaper: "We have capacity for 1,300 in the bingo area but we now get only about 550 players."

Figures are down when compared to last year, he added, with the smoking ban partially responsible for this phenomenon.
