Sixteen Thunder Bay volunteer groups are facing problems now that the Diamond Bingo Hall has called its last numbers and closed down for good.
The groups, including Alpha Delta Kappa Ontario Nu – a group of retired teachers, have been holding bingo nights there for the past eight years, and would use the funds they raised to help a wide range of charities.
Fran Winslo, a representative of Alpha Delta Kappa Ontario Nu, said that they had raised around $192,000 through bingo nights in just three months, and donated the money to charities such as Shelter House, Cancer Research, and the Faye Peterson Transition House.
Winslow believes that the closure was caused by the Ontario Alcohol and Gaming Control Commission taking too long to approve the licnse for the Neebing Minor Hockey Association to take over control of the hall.
There were sixty-four charities that would routinely benefit from fund raising bingo events held at the Diamond Bingo Hall. Some of the fund raising organisations will move to Thunder Bay Community Bingo, but overall, many of the charities will likely lose out on a large amount of funds because of the closure of Diamond Bingo Hall.
