University of Alberta (U of A) researchers have achieved their goal by designing a computer that can beat humans at the game of poker.
The poker world is going to "take a bit of time" to digest the news that a computer has beaten some humans at a game of heads-up limit hold'em poker. At least that is the opinion of Michael Bowling, the head of the U of A team, which was responsible for creating the poker-playing computer in question, Polaris II.
He was speaking to the Edmonton Journal following Sunday night's Las Vegas tournament that saw his technology defeat some of the most highly-regarded poker players in the world.
Some seven players from poker training website stoxpoker.com were beaten by Polaris II at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in America's gambling capital.
"I think there's no question that we're playing on the level of the absolute best human players in the world at the game of heads-up limit hold'em," Mr Bowling told the publication.
Recently, Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City introduced electronic poker machines where dealers are not needed.
