Due to the high number of players in the competition, it is apparently "a bit of a lottery" as to who wins the World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event.
Luck and the ability to play poker "very, very well" are needed for a player to finish the WSOP main event in Las Vegas ahead of the rest of the field. That is the opinion of PokerPlayer magazine editor-in-chief Dave Woods, who claims that the competition has become something of a "lottery" as there are so many players taking part.
This week sees the start of poker's most-lucrative tournament at the Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino in America's gambling capital. The final table will be decided on July 14th and they will meet again in November to find out who will be this year's champion.
Commenting on what it means to reach the final nine players, Mr Woods said: "It is still a massive achievement to get through ... almost two weeks of poker."
