According to a recent survey conducted in Sweden, online bingo is attracting a large male audience. A few years ago, online bingo was the province of female players, the way online poker and casino games were the domain of men.
Over the last year, online bingo mania has spread to men, with 40% of the players on swedish online bingo sites being male.
Burje Hansson, a spokesman for SveaBingo.com, said “We think that online bingo can and should be enjoyed by both men and women, and our experience is that men are often enticed by the fast games and progressive jackpots. The relaxed atmosphere in our bingo chatrooms also seem to attract more and more men, probably because it's very different from what they are used to in their preferred poker rooms.”
The Swedish site uses national colours on their layout, making it have a gender neutral appearance – perhaps this is one reason that the site attracts men, compared to many other online bingo sites which use more feminine colours.
The survey only examined online bingo in the nordic regions. It would be interesting to see how they compare to other parts of Europe, or the USA. Women are a growing audience for many branches of the online gambling industry, perhaps one day we can see both genders in all online gaming rooms.
