Gambling's seedy image has gone

Poker gives women an opportunity to compete with men on an even footing, according to an expert on the game.

Poker is about mental strength and is not centred around physical power, unlike a lot of sports, it has been claimed.

Sarah Lawrence, founder of gambling website ukpokerbuddies.com, which draws in thousands of visitors on a daily basis, has said that this is one reason why women can take on men at the game.

Females are attracted to pursuits that allow them to battle with men on an even footing, she added.

Her comments, reported by the Sunday Herald, explain how the game has changed over the years.

"I used to play regularly at all-male tables then gradually one or two women would come along to the games. Now the tables are nearly always mixed," Ms Lawrence told the publication.

Poker is a psychological game and those who play it must have the ability to predict people's behaviour, she explained further, adding that both men and women can do this.

The annual World Series of Poker in Las Vegas does have one women-only tournament, but all other tables are mixed.
