The $50,000 (£25,000) HORSE event at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) is an elite competition, but a main event victory will apparently make players household names.
The WSOP main event, which starts today, is still the competition the majority of poker players want to win, according to Dave Woods, editor-in-chief at PokerPlayer magazine.Even though the HORSE World Championship has a lot of prestige surrounding it, triumphing in the main event can make players a "household name", he said.
Mr Woods claimed that the $50,000 HORSE tournament tests a player's "all-round" ability, but the main event is still the "big one" in the eyes of those taking part.
In May 2008, organisers of the WSOP announced that the final table of the main event had been moved to take place on November 9th and 10th 2008, with the aim of boosting television audiences for the card game.
Players begin their quest for the title today. The first round is split into four separate days in order to cater for the high number of contestants.
