The success enjoyed by the 2008 World Series of Poker (WSOP) was apparently a surprise for everyone involved in the tournament.
This year's WSOP had a "great" buzz about it, according to the editor of gambling magazine InsidePoker.Alan Bowden has claimed that the success of poker's most prestigious event "surprised everyone".
He was referring to a number of records that were broken during the course of the six-week tournament, which was held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in American gambling capital Las Vegas.
Earlier this month, organisers of the WSOP revealed that this year's competition was the largest and richest in its entire 39-year history.
Some 58,720 players entered the tournament, while the total prize pool of $180,676,248 (£91.2 million) was over $20 million more than the 2007 purse.
However, Mr Bowden remained cautious, saying: "It remains to be seen if the interest can be sustained until November when the final table takes place."
