There are more and more games available that take advantage of the capabilities of the phone, but MotionX Poker is still worthy of comment – not simply because it will only set you back $5, but because it is a truly unique, and fun game.
MotionX Poker is like a mixture of a dice game and a poker game. In it, you're playing against 'the house' as you try to role the best poker hand you can using five dice that have been painted with poker cards.
The dice are standard six-sided ones, and each one has a nine, ten, jack, queen, king, and ace painted on it. Each round, you have three shakes of the dice to create your hand. You can hold on any number of cards between each roll, allowing you a good chance at building a strong hand.
The game doesn't quite use standard poker rules – you can build five of a kind, for example. The limit of six possible combinations of 'cards' may make the game sound simple, but it is actually decently challenging.
The thing that sets the game apart from standard phone games is that it makes use of the iPhone and the iPod Touch's capabilities, such as allowing you to roll the dice with a flick of your wrist, as if you were flicking a tumbler of die. If you're using the iPhone, you will 'feel' the dice rolling as the iPhone vibrates.
The game was published by FullPower Technologies, and is available online. If you want something you can play on the move that qualifies as both a 'get you thinking' game, and a simple 'pick up and play' one, then it's an easy choice.
