Murray in action

Andy Murray's emergence as a Grand Slam title contender has prompted a surge in patriotic bets, according to one online bookmaker.

The recent success of Britain's number one tennis player Andy Murray has boosted sports betting activity, it has been claimed.

Steve Freeth, sports pro at online bookmaker Bet365, has said that the Scotsman has caught the imagination of punters in the build-up to the US Open, which got underway on Monday.

Apparently, the emergence of Murray as a potential Grand Slam winner has helped draw in a number of patriotic bets from people in the UK.

Commenting further, Mr Freeth remarked: "Naturally, there is disappointment from the UK punters once Andy bites the dust, but it wouldn't affect the turnover too much."

Swiss player Roger Federer has won the US Open every year since 2004 but is yet to pick up a Grand Slam title this year.

Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open, while Spain's Rafael Nadal is the current Wimbledon and French Open champion.
