Gold medal events are attractive to those who like betting on athletics, according to Charlie McCann.

Betting on athletics gets more regular when there is a gold medal at stake, it has been claimed.

According to Charlie McCann, head of public relations at Betdirect and Stan James, the sports betting public are less likely to put wagers on small athletics events in Paris and London than they are big championship races.

Indeed, the gambling expert has suggested that there is unlikely to be an "upswing" in the number of people having a gamble on the sport, despite the success of this month's Beijing Olympic Games.

"Historically, after the Olympics there are some more athletics competitions and they are almost a lap of honour for the Olympians. Bookmakers and punters loathe to bet on those kinds of events," said Mr McCann.

The Olympics head to London next time around and are scheduled to take place between July 27th and August 12th 2012.
