A World Series of Poker final tablist is planning to make a sizeable donation to charity.
World Series of Poker main event finalist Dennis Phillips has announced that he intends to give one per cent of his winnings from the event to a cancer charity.Phillips will go into November's final table in pole position to win the $9.1 million (£4.8 million) top prize, as he has an advantage of almost two million over his nearest rival in the chip count.
His sponsor PokerStars has agreed to match the Missourian's donation, which means the Prevent Cancer Foundation would benefit by more than $180,000 if he can hold his nerve and win the game's most prestigious event.
Phillips said charitable work plays an important role in his life and that he would be "thrilled" to make a sizeable donation to the foundation.
He added: "Hopefully more poker players and final table participants will follow suit in upcoming poker circuits like the European Poker Tour and the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure."
Russia's Igor Demidov is Phillips' closest challenger going into the final table, but a recent poll found that many poker fans regard Canada's Scott Montgomery as the favourite for victory.
