A few days ago we mentioned bingo hall closures in Canada causing issues for charity groups. This phenomenon is not limited to Canada, it seems, as the organisers of a bingo night in Burton, UK, have been hit by similar problems.
Anne Upton has been holding a bingo night at Carver Road Community Centre in Burton for more than ten years. The money from the event goes to local charities, such as the County Air Ambulance, and to schools, such as the Carver Road Pre-School.
The community centre has been forced to increase rents twice in the past year. Rents for one night has been raised from £15 a night to more than double that amount - £33 a night. The money raised by the bingo events is now barely covering expenses, leaving little for the charities they are trying to help.
The community centre is in desperate need of repair, and a local councillor stated that the rent increases were due to inflation costs, and if the required repairs were to be performed, rent would have to go up again. Councillor Johnston added "We have gone to consolidating charities in the past for help with refurbishment and repairs but we feel that we do not want to keep going to them every time as we need to be standing on our own two feet."
