Sweden - gambling regualtions to change?

Reports suggest that Sweden is going to start allowing foreign gambling firms to start operating in the country.

There will be a number of UK-based firms that investigate the opportunities available to them if Sweden's gambling market opens up to foreign companies, according to Association of British Bookmakers (ABB) senior executive Andrew Lyman.

Recent reports have suggested that Swedish government is planning to allow betting and gaming organisations from outside the Scandinavian country to start operating within its borders.

And Mr Lyman thinks that companies from the UK will "seek to take advantage" of this if it does materialise.

"UK gambling operators who already lead in the area of responsible gambling are keen to expand into the European market," he remarked.

He added that there are a number of states that are looking to "implement licensing regimes which facilitate socially responsible private sector operators". Some countries are apparently more progressive than others in this regard.

This month's reports about the Swedish gambling market opening up suggest that land-based casinos and gambling machines would not be permitted, while foreign firms would need a license if they were to conduct sports gambling in the country.
