When casino gambling was legalized 30 years ago in Atlantic City, New Jersey, casino employees were barred from holding elected office, as a way to safeguard against possible corruption.
In recent times, there have been several scandals affecting government officials who do not have a casino affiliation, and sentiment is now changing. There is a law currently being considered by the State Assembly that would allow casino workers to hold elected positions. This law, if it passes, would broaden the pool of government candidates by almost 9,000 people.
The measure is expected to be voted on by the full Assembly next week.
