Will a casino appear in Surrey town?
A businessman in Surrey is attempting to overcome council opposition and create a new casino in Esher.Elmbridge borough council recently gave Jonathan Dunne planning permission to use the basement of The George bar and restaurant.
However, Mr Dunne, chairman of the Esher Business Guild, would need to get a gambling licence in order to follow through on his idea of turning it into a casino.
The authority currently has a "no casinos" policy in place, which means it is unlikely to allow him to set up the establishment.
Speaking to Get Surrey, Mr Dunne commented: "If the council has a no-casinos policy, why has it given me planning permission?
He added that a casino would be likely to bring a number of benefits to both the residents and the town.
Mr Dunne submitted his planning application to Elmbridge borough council back in July.
