As a prelude to the second World Series of Poker Europe, which has just started at the Empire Casino in London, there was a unique high flying poker event held on Thursday evening.
The World Series of Poker Europe has a first prize of £1 million, but the term high flying this time was meant in a more literal sense, with the event opening with the world’s first ever aerial poker tournament.
The tournament was held on a crane, swinging 45 metres above the ground in the same place that David Blaine spent his time in the Perspex box. The start of the tournament was delayed because the crane took an hour longer than expected to set up.
The suspended platform had no floor, so the player’s felt like they were dangling precariously above the ground, strapped into their chairs, looking out over London’s Tower Bridge. As play went on, the table began to rotate slowly. According to some reports from players at the event, play was quite difficult, after all, how can you read your opponent’s ‘Poker Face’, when they have an expression of sheer terror from the environment they are playing in!
