Competition within the gambling industry has apparently played a part in Lotto prize reducing.
One reason why fewer people now play Lotto than before is because of the competition in the market from other gambling companies, it has been suggested.Warwick Bartlett, managing director of Global Betting and Gambling Consultants, claimed that Camelot's attempts at competing with gambling groups has led to decreased interest in Lotto and consequent reduced prizes.
Commenting on competitors to Camelot, Mr Bartlett mentioned the effect the internet has had on Lotto.
"In my view the mistake for Camelot was to move away from their niche market because they are competing against online where the margins are very low and Camelot just cannot go that low," he remarked.
Camelot can return 50 per cent to customers, while sports betting returns 90 per cent, he added.
Plans have been made by the Lotto firm to launch a monthly global lottery that may offer a potential jackpot of £300 million.
