"A lot" of money has been placed on the US Ryder Cup team to win since Nick Faldo chose his two wildcards, according to gambling firm totesport.

Gambling enthusiasts have placed "a lot" of money on the US Ryder Cup team to win over the last couple of weeks, it has emerged.

Peter Petrie, spokesperson for betting firm totesport, suggested that European captain Nick Faldo's wildcard picks of Ian Poulter and Paul Casey have prompted some punters to favour an American victory at Valhalla this coming weekend.

Bookmakers generally make Europe the favourites to win the biennial competition and add to their run of three consecutive victories, which stretches back to 2002.

Explaining the sports betting patterns, Mr Petrie said: "People are thinking that there could be some mutiny in the ranks and are not too happy that Faldo didn't go for Darren Clarke, so people were thinking that there was a bit of value in the USA."
