Poker gaining popularity in Hungary

Hungary named key emerging location for professional poker tournaments.

The European Poker Tour's (EPT) decision to stop off in Hungary for the first time this week has not surprised Alan Bowden.

Commenting on EPT Budapest, the editor of InsidePoker magazine said holding the tournament in the Hungarian capital reflects eastern Europe's status as "a key growth area for poker".

Mr Bowden said that Budapest is "a perfect fit" for the EPT, because the city already features an established betting culture and several casinos.

In addition, a number of accomplished poker players have emerged from Hungary to make a splash on the world stage recently.

The poker journalist commented: "Everyone is really interested in getting new players into the game [and] increasing the global reach of the game, and Budapest is a great city.

"Poker continuously proves its popularity worldwide."

Hungarian players taking part in EPT Budapest this week include Valdemar Kwaysser, Denes Kalo and Richard Toth.
