Prime Table Games has launched a national press campaign urging the government to prohibit the use of Fixed Odds Betting Terminals in bookmakers’ shops on the high street.
As part of the campaign people are urged to sign an online petition, or write letters to the Minister for Justice, Equality, and Law Reform, Dermot Ahern, objecting to the terminals, which Prime Table Games believe offer unfair odds for players, and exploit vulnerable sections of the community.
The terminals are available to customers of bookmakers in the UK, and usually offer games such as Blackjack, Three Card Poker, and Roulette. The terminals are said to offer very poor odds when compared with the games that they emulate.
Derek Webb of Prime Table Games, the inventor of Three Card Poker, said: “Gambling should be fun, open and fair, but these terminals offer players little hope. The theoretical amount per bet that players lose on many bets is higher, and the actual percentage of player cash-ins that players lose is higher. In addition, the probability that players will lose all their available cash on a session is much higher.”
Webb believes that the Fixed Odds Betting Terminals are dangerously accessible to those who are vulnerable to gambling, and those who have gambling problems. The petition urges the government to prohibit such terminals from being placed in bookmakers’ premises.
