Bingo-themed drama scheduled for Manchester theatre

Manchester theatre to be transformed for bingo-themed play.

Visitors to a Manchester theatre next summer will be able to play bingo while watching a new drama from acclaimed writer and director Neil Bartlett.

As part of the 2009 Manchester International Festival, Everybody Loves a Winner will run at the Royal Exchange Theatre from July 1st to August 1st.

Bartlett's play takes place among the bingo halls of the north-west and is billed as a "moving, affectionate exploration of this most British of pastimes".

In order to create a suitable atmosphere, the director is planning to transform part of the Royal Exchange's auditorium into a makeshift bingo hall, with the seats replaced by tables at which audience members can play for cash prizes.

By taking this unusual step, Bartlett hopes the audience will feel more like cast members and contribute to what is described as an "emotional, tender story".

Casting for the play has not yet been announced, but an "iconic north-west comic" is rumoured to be in line for the role of the bingo caller, according to the British Theatre Guide.
