A London landmark is set to be converted into a casino.
A famous London entertainment venue is to be transformed into a casino, it has been announced. The London Hippodrome in Leicester Square has been a circus venue, music hall, cabaret theatre and nightclub since opening in 1900, with Shirley Bassey and Judy Garland among the stars to have performed there.
However, United Leisure Gaming has now been granted a casino licence for the site, having had a previous application rejected in 2007.
A spokeswoman for Westminster city council told The Stage the authority supported the decision and that it considered a casino would be better for the community than another bar or nightclub.
"We feel that a casino will provide visitors to the venue with a more integrated night out," she said.
The news comes just weeks after the council gave plans to renovate the former Playboy Club and Casino the green light.
During its heyday the casino was a regular haunt for Sean Connery and George Best, but its new owners will transform it into a luxury hotel.
