Online poker continues to grow despite the current economic climate, it has been suggested.
There is little evidence to suggest that the global credit crunch has had an effect on online poker, according to the E-Commerce Development for the State of Alderney department.Indeed, online gambling as a whole is apparently "largely unaffected" by the financial crisis which is causing problems for other businesses around the world.
These are the views of the group's head Robin Le Prevost, who also suggested the credit crunch has not had "a noticeable effect" on the horse racing industry, which is popular with sports betting fans.
Commenting on poker and the horses, Mr Le Prevost remarked: "What we are seeing is that the growth in those activities is continuing."
A recent study carried out by ICM Research and published by the Gambling Commission found that during the year to June 2008, 8.8 per cent of people said they had participated in at least one form of remote gambling during the last month.
This includes betting conducted through a computer, mobile phone or interactive/digital TV.
