Casino plans face opposition in Great Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth monument creates potential problems for casino plans.

A statue of Lord Nelson has emerged as an unexpected obstacle for a casino developer in Great Yarmouth.

Planning officials in the Norfolk resort were expected to approve Albert Jones' £35 million proposal for a new casino and hotel complex today, but have been forced to reconsider following objections from English Heritage.

The organisation claims that the development's six-storey hotel is likely to have a negative impact on the grade-one listed monument to Lord Nelson which stands nearby, the Eastern Daily Press reports.

However, planning officers believe that, at 250 metres, the casino site is located an adequate distance away from the monument.

"The distance from the hotel site to the monument makes their concerns totally irrelevant, but it is important to pay due diligence to objections to avoid any public inquiry," Charles Reynolds, chairman of the borough council's development control committee, told the newspaper.

If approved, the casino resort is expected to bring 1,000 new jobs to Great Yarmouth and significantly boost the seaside town's tourism levels.
