Police in Toronto have arrested 63 people recently, as part of raids on two illegal gambling houses. The raids took place last Wednesday, following a five month long investigation.
The police obtained search warrants for the Pertutti Bar and the Nuttz Poker Club. According to detective Emilio DiPoce, the two clubs were not associated with each other.
The Pertutti Bar operated on the surface as a bar, but the Nuttz Poker Club was operating openly as a gambling house, and had a public website.
As part of the raid, the police seized gambling equipment including tables, chips, cards, and cash. According to DiPoce, the owners of the clubs could be pulling in more than $1 million a year, tax free. DiPoce said “There’s so much money involved, it’s unbelievable.”
The clubs had been in operation for around two years, but the police had been unable to get to them until now. “We’re at the low end of the totem pole,” DiPoce said, “they don’t realize how much gambling there is and all the crimes that go along with it.”
Seven people have been charged with keeping a common gambling house, while fifty-six other people have been charged with being found in a common gambling house.
