Belgian poker tournament boasts highest ever number of players in Europe.
A record number of players descended on the town of Namur for the Belgian Poker Championship last week.Taking place from November 15th to 23rd, the 1,500 (£1,200) buy-in tournament attracted a total of 843 players the highest ever experienced for an event of this kind in Europe.
Maal Sijbrand won first prize at the well-attended event, which discredited recent claims that Europeans' appetite for tournament poker is waning due to the economic downturn.
The Dutch player, who started the final table at number nine in the chip count, took home 315,875 for first place after beating Colin O'Brien of Ireland heads-up.
O'Brien was left to console himself with a runner-up prize of 202,980, while Jolmer Meelis, another Dutchman, won 101,980 for coming third.
According to the Independent's poker columnist Nic Szeremeta, the size of the field in Belgium was boosted by "an extensive programme of qualifying satellites in various casinos across the country".
