Process to bring new casino to Teesside gets underway.
Plans to build a new casino in Middlesbrough are gaining momentum, with the town council revising its gambling policy in preparation for the venue. One of eight UK locations selected by the government for 'large' casinos earlier this year, Middlesbrough is set to welcome a new gaming parlour containing up to 150 machines with maximum jackpots of £4,000.
According to the Evening Gazette, Middlesbrough's executive councillor for regeneration and economic development Dave Budd has recently received details of the process for awarding a casino licence.
The council will now reassess its policy in relation to the Gambling Act before inviting bids from potential casino operators.
Councillor Budd commented that the casino could be "an important part of the regeneration jigsaw" in Middlesbrough.
He also indicated that the selection criteria would include a consideration of how each operator's proposal could benefit ongoing regeneration projects on Teesside.
"We will have an enormous degree of control on what happens with this," councillor Budd said.
Middlesbrough, which was one of the unsuccessful bidders for the government's ill-fated supercasino licence, already has a gaming venue nearby in the shape of Gala Casino Teesside.
