Planning officials give go-ahead to Norfolk casino.
Plans to bring a £35 million casino and hotel to Great Yarmouth moved a step closer today (November 27th), with local councillors approving a planning application for the development.Known as The Edge, the complex will feature a gaming venue run by casino operator Aspers, as well as a 138-room hotel, cinema, bowling alley and several restaurants.
The borough council's development control committee was forced to delay its decision after English Heritage raised concerns over the casino site's close proximity to the Lord Nelson monument on the Norfolk town's seafront.
However, planning officials are now satisfied that the development will not have an adverse impact on the statue, the Great Yarmouth Mercury reports.
"In my opinion this complex will not have an adverse affect on the monument, if anything it will bring more people to the attraction," said local councillor Mick Castle.
Albert Jones, proponent of the development, described the planning approval as "fantastic news".
Great Yarmouth has been a popular seaside resort since the 1840s, when piers and entertainment venues were first built on the promenade to attract day-trippers.
