Victory for Ireland in team poker event.
Four Irishmen will share a prize of £2,600 after winning the European Team Championship at the Amateur Professional Association & Tour (APAT) last weekend.Concluding in Brighton on Sunday November 2nd, the event saw Pat O'Callaghan, Brendan Byrne, Colin O'Prey and John Murray defeat teams from England, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany and Hungary to clinch the championship.
After starting as chip leader, O'Callaghan sealed victory for Ireland by beating Scotland's Gordon McArthur heads-up at the final table.
The Irish team was sponsored by Paddy Power Poker and led by non-playing captain Len Collin, who played down the significance of the prize money afterwards.
He said: "The championship is an amateur event but our participation was for pride and country more than prize money."
Meanwhile, head of poker at Paddy Power Eric Booth said the event demonstrated that amateur championships can offer "the same level of excitement" as "the huge buy-in tournaments played by professionals in Las Vegas".
The APAT is sponsored by Blue Square Poker and has announced 80 live events for its second season.
