Norfolk Casino Plan Set To Receive Approval

Casino project poised for planning approval in Norfolk.

A casino development known as The Edge is set to receive the green light from planning officers in Great Yarmouth this week.

The £35 million gambling complex, which also contains a hotel, cinema and bowling alley, is the result of a partnership between local Pleasure Beach boss Albert Jones and UK casino operator Aspers.

Council officials were expected to approve Mr Jones' proposal last month, but an objection from English Heritage delayed the process at the last minute, the Eastern Daily Press reports.

The organisation was concerned that the six-storey casino development would have a negative impact on Great Yarmouth's Lord Nelson statue, a grade one-listed monument.

A representative from English Heritage will view the site with members of the borough council's development control committee before a meeting on Friday (November 28th), when the plan is likely to be approved.

The development, which is expected to bring about 1,000 new jobs to the Norfolk resort, will take one of the eight 'large' casinos licences issued by the government earlier this year.

Great Yarmouth already contains several smaller gaming venues, such as the Mint Casino on Theatre Plain.
