Three gambling licences could be granted
Gambling is set to be legalised on a group of islands off the shore of Taiwan before the year is out, reports suggest, potentially paving the way for the appearance of casinos. It is thought that a bill will be passed soon to allow gambling in the Penghu group of islands, essentially giving the green light for three casino permits to be issued for the summer holiday location.
The licences will allow Taiwan to compete with more established rivals in the area such as Macau, Singapore and South Korea.
However Su Kun-hsiung, mayor of the Penghu city of Makung, has stressed the permits will not bring Taiwan into direct competition with China's gambling capital of Macau.
"We don't want to exceed three licences. We're not going to be the same as Macau," he said.
The Penghu archipelago consists of 90 islands and covers an area of 141 square kilometers.
It is situated in the Taiwan Straight off the western coast of Taiwan.
