The World Poker Tour 'World Poker Finals' kicked off yesterday with 162 hopefuls heading to the Foxwoods Resort Casino for day 1A. Of those competitors, only 97 made it through the five levels of play to make it to Day 2.
The field of 162 was a significant decrease on last year's attendance, when 575 players made the buy-in. This drop means that the prize pool will most likely be a lot smaller than last year, with the top prize not reaching the $1.7 million that winner Mike Vela took home in 2007.
This year the day 1A pool included pros such as TJ Cloutier, Joe Sebok, Kathy Liebert, and Mike Vela, who were all sent to the rail before the end of the day.
Jason Potter came out on top at the end of 1A, with an impressive chip lead. He left holding 183,825 chips, with Vadim Trincher next in line with 163,600. Former World Poker Tour winners Kevin Saul and Jonathan Little were in fifth and sixth place, with 135,350 chips and 131,400 chips respectively.
The second wave of day 1 entrants will begin at 12PM EST on Thursday.
