A 53 year old trucking accounting manager from Illinois is more than $4.5 million better off today thanks to a successful run in the World Series of Poker. The man, Dennis Phillips of Cottage Hills, Alton, dropped out early on Monday, as the last remaining American in the field.
The finals of the main event of the World Series of Poker were being held in Las Vegas. Phillips lost out to Peter Eastgate, a 22 year old Danish professional poker player. Eastgate will be facing off against Russia’s Ivan Demidov in heads up play to see who will take the $9.15 million prize money, and the title.
Phillips took home $4,517,773 for his third place finish.
The final table consisted of nine players, who will be splitting a total of $32.7 million between them. Those nine players came from a field of 6,844 who entered the early stages of tournament play in July.
Play was suspended for several months when the field was narrowed down to the final nine players. The final table play resumed in Las Vegas, with the table being televised live on ESPN.
